“If you’re looking for the next big thing, and you’re looking where everyone else is, you’re looking in the wrong place.” – Mark Cuban

Where do you look for your next big opportunity? Many people tend to follow the masses and what they are doing. That’s why they call these people the masses – there are a lot of them.

The challenge is, by the time the masses hear about and begin taking action in an area, most of the tremendous opportunity is already gone. People are competing on price which means profits are being squeezed.  Is this really where you want to be competing based on price?   In this market there are only two winners – the premium, highest priced product with the best brand and the lowest priced product.  There is no winning by being the second lowest price.

How to Do It Different

Think about the explosive growth companies – Apple, Microsoft, Google, Uber, Facebook. These companies were in at the beginning of their industries with little to no competition… and often without even an industry in place yet. They created entire industries based on their success.

The largest opportunities for huge success come from exploring areas no one else is in. Create the new opportunity instead of improving on an existing one.  This is exactly what the founders of the companies listed above did. Doing the same allows for the explosive growth most entrepreneurs dream about. As a bonus, even when competitors come in, they still must tackle the giant to be successful. It creates a competitive advantage for you.

Look for ideas which address a human need or desire in a new way which no one else is doing. Then look for a method to deliver the solution to this need. This will provide your opportunity to be the next big thing in our world.
